Amazon Prime Arrives In India

Amazon, the ecommerce giant with burgeoning ambitions in OTT video, has launched Prime, its paid membership service, in over 100 cities in India.

A local launch for Amazon’s Prime Video – complimentary movies and TV series for Prime members, including original content from Amazon – should follow later in the year. 

India becomes the second market in APAC to offer Amazon Prime, after the service made its regional debut in Japan last September.

Amazon is reportedly producing its own video content in India, after releasing the first dramas it made in Japan earlier this year.

Indian subscribers can join Prime for a Rs499 (US$7.8) introductory annual fee, half the Rs999 standard rate.

Bengaluru, July 26, 2016: Amazon.in today announced the launch of its globally popular Amazon Prime membership program in India. With Prime, Indian customers in over 100 cities can enjoy unlimited free one-day and two-day delivery on lakhs of eligible products from India’s largest online shopping selection. Amazon.in is offering a free trial period of 60 days to allow Indian shoppers to experience the benefits of Prime.

Amazon.in is offering Prime at an introductory annual subscription fee of INR.499, a discount of INR.500 over the list price of INR.999. As a special promotion, customers who sign up early can enjoy Prime free for 60 days, which is twice the normal trial period globally. Non-members will continue to have the option of expedited delivery on their orders with the usual delivery charges where applicable. Prime members in 20 cities can also choose same-day, morning or scheduled delivery at a discounted fee of INR 50 per order on over 10,000 products. For deliveries to cities not yet eligible for one-day or two-day delivery, members will receive free delivery with no minimum purchase.

Amazon.in has revamped its on-site and app experience to allow customers to seamlessly discover and choose Prime products. Customers searching for products can use the new “Prime” filter to look for all eligible Products. A “Prime” badge will be displayed on listings to indicate when a product will be delivered to the customer’s address. Customers can sign up for it at www.amazon.in/prime.

Prime products will be delivered through the Fulfilment By Amazon (FBA) channel. FBA is the company’s gold standard product fulfilment service. It helps sellers increase online sales by giving them access to Amazon’s fulfilment resources, fast, free delivery options for their products and acclaimed customer service. Sellers need to simply send their products to an Amazon fulfilment center and Amazon stores inventory, picks, packs and ships orders across India and also provide customer service on their behalf. FBA products are eligible for premium deliveries such as One Day Delivery and Morning Delivery, generating more orders for sellers. Most sellers report a substantial sales increase after they start using FBA.
